How Much Water Do I Use On My Lawn? Irrigation System?
Without water in late spring or early summer. Be prepared by having your irrigation system ready and using the following tips:
Turf quality is directly linked to available moisture in the root zone. Keep the soil moist for optimal uptake by the roots by watering several times per week at longer timed intervals. This method promotes deeper root growth and is preferred over shallow daily watering because natural evaporation can lead to shallow rooting.
Adjusting watering to longer intervals encourages surface drying between watering days, minimizing fungus disease potential. Early Morning is recommended so the grass dries before nightfall. In addition, water pressure is usually better in the early hours, the dew is reclaimed, and the winds are usually calm. Evening and night watering may invite fungus problems. But, if it’s the only time you can water, please do so! And please abide by any covenant restrictions in place.
1/2 inch of water every 3-4 days is adequate for most soil types, as long as the soil stays moist. Achieving the standard of an inch a week should be the goal for healthy turf.
We are often asked, ‘How long should I be watering my lawn?’
The amount of time you should water is directly related to the output of each sprinkler. One inch of water each week is recommended for healthy turf. To determine this, you will need to measure your irrigation’s output. To calibrate, place a straight-sided container like a tuna fish can under the sprinkler pattern and record how long it takes to collect 1/2 inch of water. For instance, if it takes an hour to collect 1/2 inch, plan on running your sprinklers for one hour every 3 or 4 days, for a total of 1 inch in a week’s time.
Water Max Moisture Aid
In high-traffic areas, chances are the soil is compacted restricting water and nutrient penetration. Compacted turf can be alleviated by aerating. Adding Water-Max moisture Aid to your lawn program temporarily breaks the sur- face tension of browned-out turf and helps move water through the soil.
Make sure your landscape plantings are not impeding irrigation pathways. As the growing season continues, we often see the result of vegetation interference on turf quality.
