Best Mulch Options for the PNW

Skip the pine straw and dyed “beauty bark” if you want something that actually benefits the soil long-term. Here are the mulches that work best in our area:

Arborist wood chips – Often free or very cheap from local tree services. A mix of bark, wood, and leaves, they break down slowly and feed the soil microbiome. Perfect for perennial beds, shrub borders, and pathways. Ask for “unseasoned” or “fresh” chips if you want maximum soil-building benefits.

Medium or fine bark mulch – Cedar, fir, or hemlock bark from local mills. Cedar naturally repels insects and decays slowly; hemlock and fir break down faster and add more nutrients. Widely available at nurseries and big-box stores.

Compost – Homemade or purchased. Great for vegetable beds because it adds nutrients quickly. Use as a top-dressing (1–2 inches) rather than a thick layer, or mix with bark for longer-lasting coverage.

Aged sawdust or aged hog fuel – Common in rural areas near mills. Make sure it’s aged (at least 6 months) to avoid nitrogen tie-up.

Leaf litter or leaf mold – Free if you rake your own (or your neighbor’s) maple, alder, or oak leaves. Shred them first so they don’t mat down in the rain.

Straw (wheat or barley) – Occasionally used in vegetable gardens, but it breaks down fast and can attract slugs if applied too thickly.

Mowing in the Rain? It's Often Unavoidable Here

Not ideal, but in the PNW, sometimes you just have to mow in light rain or on damp grass. Prioritize the 1/3 rule over dryness—overgrown lawns are worse for health than a slightly wet cut. That said, heavy rain can lead to clumping, uneven results, soil ruts, and disease spread. Pro tips: Raise your deck slightly, go slow, and clean the mower after to avoid issues.

Bag in Spring, Mulch the Rest of the Time

During those explosive spring growth spurts, bag clippings are used to prevent smothering. Otherwise, mulch them back in (also called grasscycling). This returns valuable nutrients, builds organic matter in your soil, improves structure, and can cut fertilizer needs significantly. Fine clippings decompose fast and feed your lawn naturally.

Change Directions Every Mow—Don't Skip This

Even when it's inconvenient, switch up your pattern: stripes one way, then perpendicular or diagonal next time. Mowing the same direction repeatedly creates ruts, compacts soil (a big problem in our clay-heavy yards), and causes grass to lean, leading to uneven growth and those annoying "runts" or thin patches. Varying directions keep everything upright, even, and healthy

Main Telltale Signs It’s Time

Grass height hits 3–4 inches – This is the #1 trigger for PNW lawn pros. Once it’s looking shaggy and consistently taller than that, it’s ready for its first trim. Waiting too long can shock the grass when you finally cut it.

Active new growth – Fresh green shoots appearing, blades standing upright instead of lying flat from winter, and the lawn starting to thicken and green up.

Ground is drying out – Spring soil around here stays soggy for a while. Only mow when the ground is firm enough that your mower won’t leave ruts or tear the grass instead of cutting cleanly. Look for a few consecutive dry(ish) days.

Warmer, consistent temps – Daytime highs regularly above 50°F are a strong signal that growth is ramping up. Bonus points if soil temperatures (a few inches down) are hitting 45–50°F.

No big frost risk – Avoid cutting right before a cold snap; fresh cuts are more vulnerable to damage.

Tips for That All-Important First Mow

Mow high: Set your blade to leave 2–3 inches (never remove more than 1/3 of the blade length). Taller grass shades the roots, retains moisture, and helps crowd out weeds in our cool, rainy springs.

Sharp blades matter: Dull blades tear grass and open the door to disease—especially problematic in our damp climate.

Go easy early: If it’s still wet, mow less often at first. Growth tends to explode in April and May once things really get rolling.
